Default Mailing with Perl

I'm just interested to know whether you need some kind of dedicated SMTP server set up to enable your Perl scripts to send out e-mail or whether the MAIL command takes care of all that for you?

I'm only asking because I've just bought a domain name and intend to use CGI scripts which hopefully will be able to send out e-mails to various visitors ... but I don't have an SMTP mail box with them and I haven't really got the spare change lying around to buy a dedicated mail server

Can some one fill me in on that?

Cheers
