how is this done?
Hello,
I was wondering how that nifty cylindrical globe was created. 3d? or could that be actionscript?

It looks to me like a 2D map that has been split up into sections, that are then made to rotate with actionscript. You can see definite edges of the map sections that don't fade together smoothly with alpha as they 'appear' to get further away.
Have a look at the attachment.
n.b. all credit goes to jtarbell of levitated for this script. I learnt a lot from the open source that used to be on his site.
Incredibly nice stuff.

I know this kind of faking the sight, take a look at this simple but tricky masking (it's not mine anyway)

Yeh, Farafiro, thats a simple and effective animation.
anyway, here is the FLA file from J.Tarbell's Rotational Voices experiment. I'm a little hesitant to post someone elses file, but seeming he put it online for download and his site isn't up anymore, I guess it can't be too bad.
I had to remove the sounds from the library because the file was almost 2 mb with them.
But this will give you an idea of the scripting involved in making this effect.
Good luck
