how'd they do that?

At the page below is this interesting tree thing that "grows" over time. I've been trying to figure out how this effect was done, but I can't even come close to replicating it. What am I missing?

Can someone give me a hand understanding how this is put together?

It is a mix of duplicateMovieClip + high level of mathematic(using COS and SIN)
