Word of caution
I think AS[org] need to express caution accepting articles where the sole purpose is for benefits of the author. I'm specifically referring to this article and the author. He states:
Quote:

Wondershare PPT2Flash Standard 4.5 still remains in affordable price for only $59.95. During this holiday season, every customer will get 30+ PowerPoint templates in a value of $99.95 for FREE as our special Holiday gift.
|
He obviously created this article with the intention of boosting his own sales. Such an article is biased, misleading, and I don't think AS[org] should support them. I think articles like this devalue the worth of AS[org] as such sales techniques are cloaked in the form of an article.

articles.
All of his other articles plug the same product (which is his). The article is intended as promotion of his materials.

it is in press releases though and everyone knows what they are like. There are other 'tutorials' plugging software by the same company

The author of this series contacted us and asked our permission for the first article. We thought it was reasonable, but I value your opinion too and the point about it beng biased without a clear expression of interest disclaimer is a very good one. I'm in Vietnam at the moment but when I get back I'll review whether or not these need to be moved to press-releases, or similar.

Vietnam... Very nice... Hope you enjoy the place while you are visiting those countries...
Those articles are in a gray area... To me, they seem more like ads which are not really suitable for the press release... If we were to allow such articles, they rather belong in the actual tutorial section if they have more step by step instruction on how to do one thing with their tool... But that's my personal opinion...

Well thanks for thinking about the issue. If you guys feel it adds merit to AS[org], by all means keep them coming (I'm not trying to be pushy). I appreciate the thought that has already gone into wither to accept them or not. To me, reading that article feels like a ad for a product (that by association AS[org] supports) and not a dissemination of ideas and information.
I would think if they were allowed at all (as in the tutorials CyanBlue suggested) that any unknown proprietary product that the tutorial solely features should be evaluated first by an AS[org] member. If deemed useful, then allow the tutorial. But I don't see too much that this thing can do that the free tool Wink can't do.
The troubling part for me is what is the purpose of this article? After reading it, I felt that is was simply to boost sales of his own product and not to benefit the community.

Isn't a press release just an ad disguised as news?

I think the press release should be the news only from the AS.org... Like somebody from the AS.org explaining some changes in the AS.org or somebody from the AS.org reviewing an exhibit or a conference or something like that...

i don't agree with that. i think its a valid press release and we cannot expect the owners of the site to moderate all such things.
perhaps a review by a site owner or someone they trust in turn for a free copy for the reviewer might be good for both parties.
other than that, i think its a valid way of supporting the community. every product of good to excellent quality which is sold grows the ecosystem in which we work which helps everybody, very similar to how open source projects also grow the ecosystem (or not depending on how you view that :s - a whole different discussion )
