flash detection

i've been trying to find a flash detection (pref. in java) that works with the majority of browsers, ie and mac, but i cant find a tutorial or a page that has the code that i can view and figure out.
i've found some, but for some reason they just dont work properly.
something that detects the flash5 plugin, if you got it, forward you on, if not, then off to macromedia you go

can anyone point me in the direction of a good solid tutorial and/or existing page?

Collin Moock's FPI does exactly this and is made in Javascript, you'll find it at http://www.moock.org
