Default Picture Quality

Hi, I have a movie where 3 images fade onto the screen then rotates to a certain part of the screen, 1 after another. The problem is the images all look jagged when viewed in IE.
I made these 3 images in photoshop and saved them as gif's with a transparent background.
I also tired saving them as Jpegs in PS but they no longer have a transparent background but instead an annoying white edge around the image (the images are in an oval shape). The jpegs looks better, not as jagged but I don't want the whites around them.
Any ideas on how to improve the quality of these pictures?
Thanks in advance.
