Difference between a list and a comboBox?

Just wondering what the difference is between the two. Can't seem to find anything online that tells me.

I know what they both are. I had already looked on those pages, via google, but I can't see in what situation one should be used over another because they both seem to do the same thing.

From those links:
The List control displays a vertical list of items.
The ComboBox control contains a drop-down list from which the user can select a single value.
