Just had to tell someone.

Well, first, thanks all for the encouragement!

I can't tell you specifics as I want to avoid violating the agreement of
the certification, but I think I can give you my opinion about it.

What I think I can safely say is that as a Flash Dev of 5 years now, I
was able to pass with an 82% and I needed 75% to pass the MX version.
And I'm pretty sure about the questions I didn't know (from what I can
remember) and don't feel that I made 'stupid' mistakes in the answers -
the ones I got wrong I 'truly' didn't know. Make sense?

My opinion would be that if a person only has a year or so experience
with Flash, that it'd be VERY tough - nearly impossible. I think that
95% of the questions that *I* knew accurately were straight from
experience with Flash rather than text book knowledge (reading manuals).
Realistically, I wouldn't think someone could 'cram' for it and expect
to pass it. It really does require just as much experience as it does
book knowledge.

However, I WOULD say that someone with 2+ years experience (at least)
working with clients or on job experience *could* consider taking it.

Hope that helps with questions about the test. I think that's about all
I can really say about the test itself.

Thanks again for your comments and encouragement,

You can take the Flash 5 cert still! If you go out the VUE's web site,
you'll see that they have Flash 5 and MX out there.

The funny thing about my taking the MX was that it was a mistake. I had
originally singed up for Flash MX, then thought it was a waste of $150
and that I should just do Flash 5 (because I thought I might not know
enough about MX's new features). Well, I forgot to change it, and only
when I got there and singed in did it hit me: 'I'm singed up for
MX!!!'.

I just figured, 'ah, what the hay. If I pass, then great.'

Someone else asked if it was hard or easier than I thought. I can't
talk about it specifically, as there were questions I was surprised by
in different areas and mentioning them would give some things away. So,
to answer the question, yes and no. LOL Some sections were like "WOW,
I can't believe they quantified that into a question, but yeah, I
know what you're askin'". Other sections were like 'cake'.

All I can say is, you're experience with Flash will pay off just as much
as your book knowledge of the features.

Thanks for that

Unfortunately, there is an agreement you signoff on when you take the
test. It's a 'non disclosure statement' and anyone who's taken the test
cannot give out certain information (IE: question examples).

If you look back to Friday/Saturday/Sunday, you'll see some posts I made
about the testing and so forth. That information is about all I can
tell you.

Bottom line, it's just as much your experience with Flash as it is your
book knowledge of Flash that'll get you by. That's a brief summary of
what I essentially said prior.

Hope that helps,

Sure! They give you 90 minutes and I say I got done in about 50.

There are multiple choice (select one and some are select 2 or 3)
questions. Each question has a 'review' checkbox so that if you're not
sure, you can review all the 'checked' questions after you get through
all the questions. You can also put comments in about each question.
Not sure what that's for.

The cool and unsettling part is that the results are INSTANT. As soon
as you click 'done' BAM, you're lookin' at your score.

Obviously, it's all done on computer. You get scratch paper and a pen.
No food, drinks, papers, bags - anything allowed in with you.

And, for some reason, they don't like emotional outburst - good or bad.
I had both. JK.

Honestly, I took the number of 'review' questions and came up with a
percentage based on the number of total questions. When I saw that I
would be over the required 75%, I just hit 'done'.

I've seen one somewhere.

The one I actually had in mind, doesn't come from the MM site, but rather a
dutch site that organizes Macromedia Certification exams. And is located here:

More info here:

only interesting if you're from Belgium or The Netherlands though I think
:-)

oh, here is a site that has a testing center locator search thing...

just some guessing, as I have no idea:

the developers test is probably aimed at advanced actionscripting + database
connectivity, xml, etc...
while the disigners test might be more about interfaces and such.

So,
developers --> backend stuff
designers --> frontend stuff

at least that's how I picture it...

From Macromedia's web site...

Certified Macromedia Flash Developer
Now you'll be able to demonstrate your Macromedia Flash expertise and
certify that you know how to identify requirements, design, code, implement,
integrate, test, deploy, and troubleshoot applications using Macromedia Flash.

Certified Macromedia Flash Designer
By early 2002, you will be able to certify that you can perform critical
Macromedia Flash design tasks - such as identify requirements, design,
structure, and optimize Macromedia Flash animations efficiently.

I just got back from my Flash 5 developer exam (they don't seem to have
flashMX developer available yet, only designer). It was harder than I
expected. As John Grden said, it's as much about your experience of Flash as
knowing what is written in the books. Still, I got 88% so can't have been
that difficult. ;-)

Thanks, John, for this and the other informative posts about the exams!

Just as a friendly reminder of what you should assume is common sense:
Discuss the tests, their structure, time limit, etc. is just fine - and
encouraged. If we catch anyone overtly or surreptitiously attempting to
reveal actual Macromedia certification exam content in any way, we will tie
you up, coat you with sugar and let red fire ants slowly eat you alive.

And don't worry, I've tried and will continue to not reveal any

That would degrade my accomplishment and ultimately would cause the

Yeah... Congrats to you, Richard...

You said that it was harder than you thought, yet you got 88%... Bad boy... You
don't want anybody else to take it, right??? :p

Got a question for you... According to MM's FAQ... I will have to bring the
candidate ID number assigned by VUE... What is that number??? Is that the 'Order
Number'(0000-0000-0000)???
I doubt that I will pass the exam, but I am going to try it tomorrow... I didn't
plan to, but I kinda compulsively registered... I guess that 3 times deal for
one payment kinda made me do it... If that deal is not true then my $150 just
went up high... :)

Kinda curious though... If you check on the MM site, it has lists of certified
people and the number is surprisingly low... Why do you think it is that low???

Wish me lots of luck!!! :)
Jason

No, I want lots of people to take the exam and fail... then I'll feel very
clever. ;)

Really, I just want to make the point that the exam was more difficult than
I expected and my respect for it as a qualification is now higher than it
was before I took the test.

I went in thinking "if some potential clients will be swayed by me having
this qualification then I'll do it, but really it's just a waste of time"
and came out thinking "if I know someone has this qualification I'll know
they're probably a very good flash developer".

Probably because the one thing they can't do in this test is sit you down
and hand you a complicated and difficult project to develop over a number of
weeks. That's the real test of a good developer.

Re: candidate ID... I took a copy of the booking confirmation email to the
test, but didn't need it. As John said, they had me on the system. (I guess
you need the order number in case something has gone wrong and you're not on
the system). The one thing I did need was two forms of personal ID, both
with a signature and at least one with a photo. Perhaps that's what
Macromedia mean.

Good luck.

That is what I thought in the beginning... You get to pay $150, and you get to
have three chances to take the exam... MM says... (http://www.macromedia.com/support/tr.../faq.html#fail)

>What if I fail the exam?
>
>You are allowed to take the exam up to three times in a one-year period from
>the date you first took the exam, with a minimum of 30 days in between exams.

So... I went to the place that VUE told me to go take the exam and asked the
people there if it is right, and they said that it shouldn't be... :( Well... I
gotta go check it again with VUE guys on the web later on...

(coming in late on this thread: )

I would be absolutely astonished if Macromedia became the first company in
the history of certification testing to allow one test fee to cover multiple
attempts at the same test. VUE is a contracted testing center, and charges
Macromedia for the delivery of each and every test.

Also, it is not the same test you will take next time. The tests are
downloaded just-in-time for each student and are different every time.

The logic behind the 3 strikes is that if you can't pass it in 3 tries, you
had better go back to class!

Nah... I'm just kidding...

Well... To be honest with you, the exam was fairly easy in my opinion... But the range of the exam was quite large and there were lots of questions that I was not able to answer just by reading a book or going over the cram session... I think the most siginificant part about the exam was that it basically requires real life experience on many stuff that goes with interaction between Flash and XML for example or many from the OOP related stuff that I have gotten by helping others at the AS.org...

Did I answer your question???

Thanks for posting all the info CB. I think I'm a ways off from taking the exam, but reading all the posts gives me an idea of what to work on before gambling my $150!

Good info.
