In all my travels I have yet to see/find a way to have the backgroundColor of a Tree transparent.
From livedocs:
"There is no supported way to make the List items transparent."
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flash...=00002493.html
Anyone have a hack?

Oh, yeah. Sure it does. But I can't click on anything in the Tree. Kinda defeats the purpose.

fix
hey, this is so easy, i freaked out when i found it. in your properties bar, with your text area selected, look next to the "<>" buttton. there's a button to the right that looks like a text field, click that and your bg will go from white to transparent.

Ahhh...Yes. You are correct, sir. They are referring to the HTML button for a textField.

follow the link to a pic of the properties bar, where the buttons can be found while your text box is selected. the <> button is to the left of the button you need to press, it enanbles HTML formatting (which i'm having trouble getting to work). anyways click the indicated button, and you should be in business, it works for me, using dynamic text.

Yes, that is correct. That is the 'background' property of a textField. We are talking about List Components (more specifically the Tree).
