Default Accessing button inside Movie Clp

I'm new here, so this might be a simple questions. Did a search but found nothing. Anyway, here it goes..

I have created a sub menu out of a movie clip. Inside the movie clip are buttons for navigation. I want the buttons in the submenu be able to "drive" the Main Timeline. So when a user "clicks" on a button, that shifts the Main Timeline or loads a different file or whatever. But I have no idea how to access the buttons inside the movie clip.

I use the "Insert a Target Path" function in side the "Action" panel, but that doesn't seem to do it. I can't even get a trace function to display the name of the buttons. Any help would be appreciated.

For example,

returns "o" in the output panel

Thanks for the help,

I've since tried to use the AttachMovie method to insert the movie clip on the fly..

var nextDepth:Number=this.getNextHighestDepth();
this.attachMovie("mcSubmenu", "linkSubmenu", nextDepth);
var linkSubmenu:MovieClip;
The movie clip loads great and works, but I still have no idea on how to create an event handler that triggers on the button inside the movie clip??
