Hi...

1) Click on the 'File' menu, scroll down select 'Import'.
2) Locate the animated gif file then 'Open' it.

This will import the animation into seperate keyframes along your timeline.

You can turn individual keyframes into seperate symbols if you wish.

Good luck.

Default more?

i've done this but it merges/flattens the imported .gif into the background... that makes for a huge animated gif!

i guess what i need to know is, can you import an animated gif and keep it seperate from everything else?

Hi...
Instead of importing the animated gif into your main timeline import it into it's own 'movie clip'. This will keep it seperate from everything else.
You can then alter the size of the said gif, to whatever you like.

Good luck.
