need help with checkers game

I wanted to make a checkers game. I already made the board and now I have to make each piece. I was going to turn it into a biology game. Each piece is going to represent something in biology such as an amoeba, etc. The problem is I don't know where to start. I wanted the game to be like this: you your the game piece and you capture the enemy and when you capture the enemy a description of something dealing with biology will come up in the text field. I don't know if I need to use if then statements or what. I was wondering could someone help me because this is my first game I am trying to make and I am a beginner at actionscripting.

I've previously made checkers in Flash. Mine include artificial inteligence but even without that it's prolly a bit too complicated for a beginner to start with. I would suggest you try a simpler game to begin with, until you are more adept with scripting.
