i'd like to send the results of a form to a cgi which is not at the same subdomain as the movie. specifically, its just a simple email field (with a couple hidden fields) to sign visitors up at listbot.com. flash help says the getURL command will only work posting within the movie's subdomain. any suggestions?

Have you tried it anyway? I remember the first send mail CGI tutorial I read used a standard CGI form on some other guy's server and it worked fine (Flash 4)....
