Why is safari so rubbish?

Sorry that the title was so provocative. I'm not trying to start a flaming session, I really mean it.
Whenever I make anything vaguely demanding in Flash it seems to perform perrfectly well in Firefox and Explorer and appallingly badly in safari. I can't believe that me and my collegues are the only people to have noticed this.

You aren't, but for now we just have to put up with it and keep downloading the updates.
