Default Total Number of Frames Question

So, I happen to know that the _root timeline is at least part of the total number of frames in the SWF. However, does each individual item count towards that total number of frames? For instance: If the main movie is 200 frames long with fifty graphic Symbols, would the total number of frames come up to be 250? And do movieclips, since they have their own timeline, add towards the total frame count? Buttons as well? Any and all help would be appreciated.
