Adobe today announced that the 2010 Layer Tennis design tournament will kick off this Friday, August 20, at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. Hosted by Coudal Partners and presented by Adobe Creative Suite 5, Layer Tennis is a series of live online digital contests where creative professionals send files back and forth in real time, building upon each others’ designs while a guest commentator provides play-by-play updates. This season, the live matches can be viewed at and will run every Friday through December 10.

“Layer Tennis is an interesting concept and a completely unique experience for designers. There are no clients, no briefs, no traditional support structures or experiences to rely on – it's really just you, your opponent, the clock and a few thousand people on Twitter,” said Greg Hubacek, graphic designer and finalist in last year’s Layer Tennis tournament. “The matches are completely free-form and have very little rules, so it really empowers the participants to have complete control over the creative process.”

Each match consists of 10 volleys, each lasting 15 minutes. Spectators can watch and post commentary, and are encouraged to vote for a winner after each match on the Layer Tennis website. Every volley can be bookmarked and live updates for all matches will be available as RSS and Twitter feeds. Spectators can also become a fan of Layer Tennis on Facebook. And, after each week’s Layer Tennis match, the winners and their work will be featured on the Adobe website.

New this season is a live, in-person match taking place at Adobe MAX 2010 in Los Angeles, CA where attendees will get an up close and personal view of the contestants in action. Also in the works is a collaborative offline event to raise money for charity – information  will soon be available on the Layer Tennis website.

“Now in its third year, Layer Tennis has a larger following than ever before and this season will showcase creative talent from across the globe,” said Jim Coudal, president of Coudal Partners. “We’ve added a number of bells and whistles to this year’s tournament, including the in-person match at Adobe MAX.”
