This however, says its for beginners, and thats me, for sure. But the first thing you say to do is open 'flex builder'. What is that? What does it have to do with A.S. 3.0? Better yet, what does it have to do with Flash? I stopped reading it after that.

If this is not a beginner's tut, label as such, please. You seem be assuming a lot about us.

The history was nice, but prerequisite knowledge should be listed. A quick goal could be stated.. a summary of whats going to be done in the tut to teach lesson.. (what the example will be about). Stuff like that.. so we're not wondering whats going on

Thanks!<br/><br/>

I am a beginner... to AS. I've never so much as looked at it before today. I am not, however, a beginner to software development. It took me all of 30 seconds to Google, identify, and then download Flex Builder (which is a very nice little Visual Studios-like dev environment).

And he actually DOES mention what Flex Builder is, and where to get it (Adobe), in the paragraph right before the one you mention (the "first thing he says"):
"AS3 code can be edited with several programs, and can be compiled with the free Flex Development Kit provided by Adobe, but the fastest and easiest ( and most recommended ) development environment is Adobe Flex Builder, or Adobe Flex Builder plug-in for Eclipse. That's why we use Flex Builder in this tutorial."

This tutorial is doable without Flex Builder. I don't know the program, but I will check it out when I'm more comfortable with the AS3 workings and syntax.

I had a similar problem as Dasn, I solved it by not using the embed at all. I added the audio file to my library, gave it linkage (right click -> linkage, check export for actionscript) with base class flash.media.Sound and gave it a class name BallHit.

That has as a result that you can use:

sfx = new BallHit();

Be sure to declare the variable as a Sound, just as in the tutorial though. I haven't tried this for the image, but I image if you export it in the library as class BallImg (use baseclass movieclip or sprite) you could use gfx = new BallImg() or something.

I used this method to get sound working in my app, but it's very possible that my method is needlessly complex and sounds can be imported in a tidier and faster way.

Cheers,

Here is what to do:
You will have three files, which all should be in the same directory.
1) Create FirstCircle.as just as the tutorial explains (make sure you are copy-pasting the correct version!)
2) Create MovingCircle.as just as the tutorial explains
3) Create a blank Flash Document entitled FirstCircle.fla. In FirstCirlce.fla click on the stage and go to Properties. Set the Document class to "FirstCircle" (without the quotes)
4) Compile and run FirstCircle.fla just as you would any Flash project.

It would be great if someone with more experience could explain why this above method works in terms of classes/ooo/etc., explaining also the role of the Flash document and its time line.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tutorial!<br/><br/>

But the first line of the code says: Package { which means this script is a class. I'm not familiar with FlashDevelop, but if you use Flash CS3 or 4 you should add this script in a new-actionscript-file save it and name it. Create a flash as3 file and add the name of the class (I suggest Main.as as it's name) to the document class panel (which is in the properties)<br/><br/>
